When I first started blogging three years ago, I had no idea that the income I earned from my writing would eventually allow me to quit my corporate job. In fact, I knew pretty much nothing about technical writing, website design, hosting, social media marketing, email marketing, or monetization techniques when I first started.
However, as time went on I learned more and more. Eventually I finally realized there was a simple two-step process for making money with blogging:
1. Drive traffic to your website via email, social media, referrals, direct visits, and organic search traffic.
2. Monetize that traffic via affiliate links, display ads, or your own products.
That’s it. Drive traffic, then monetize that traffic.
I was able to perform both of these steps better and better over the course of my first two years, increasing my monthly pageviews from 10,000 to over 100,000 and increasing my revenue from a few dollars to over $1,000 per month consistently.
However, there was still one aspect of blogging that I didn’t actually understand: How to drive traffic to my site through the use of SEO – search engine optimization.
I had heard the term “SEO” being thrown around constantly in blogging circles and on social media, but it seemed too complicated and confusing to even bother learning about.
It wasn’t until I finally decided towards the end of 2018 to read anything and everything I could about SEO that I had a profound realization: SEO actually isn’t that complicated. In fact, all you need to know about SEO can be broken down into three simple steps:
1. Identify keywords to target.
2. Write articles that target those keywords.
3. Optimize your articles for SEO so that they rank for those keywords.
If you’re unfamiliar with SEO, that three-step process might seem like it’s written in a foreign language, but it’s actually not complicated. In fact, by using that simple process I started writing SEO-optimized articles on this blog in late 2018 and I saw some insane results in just a matter of months.
In early November 2018 I was receiving 1,100 users per week from organic search traffic. By June 2019, after consistently implementing my simple SEO process with new articles, that number jumped up to over 4,400. My organic search traffic quadrupled in just eight months.
The most fascinating part to me was that my organic traffic almost doubled after just two months of using this simple SEO strategy.
I knew that having a domain that was a few years old with some existing domain authority helped my articles rank even faster, so I was curious to see if this SEO strategy would work with a brand new site.
So, at the beginning of 2019 I launched a statistics educational website called Statology. Using the same SEO strategy, I was able to grow the organic search traffic to this site from zero to over 400 users per day in just five months.
The most exciting part about this process was that it worked over and over again like clockwork for tons of keywords.
Here are just a few examples of keywords that Statology ranks for in the top five search results on Google, along with graphs that show their weekly pageviews over time:
Keyword: “P value is 0.000”
Keyword: “MLE uniform distribution”
Keyword: “P value from f table”
Keyword: “Survival curve in Excel”
Over and over again I was able to follow a simple process to get my articles to rank on the front page of Google:
1. Find a good keyword to write about.
2. Write an article that targets that keyword.
3. Optimize the article for SEO.

For the longest time I thought that I didn’t need to understand how to drive traffic to my blog by using SEO. After all, I had a good amount of traffic coming from direct visits, referrals, social media, and email, and I had built up that traffic without understanding a lick about SEO.
It wasn’t until I finally started bringing in serious organic search traffic through SEO that I understood why it was the best source of traffic: When you write an SEO-optimized article, you increase the chances that your article will rank on the front page of Google for a certain keyword, which allows you to get free recurring traffic on a daily basis.
For example, consider one article I wrote in early 2018 titled Reader Question: Should I Keep my Stressful High-Income Job to Reach F.I. as Fast as Possible? I’m really proud with how this article turned out. It received a lot of attention on social media, tons of comments, and several outreach emails from readers. However, that article only gets a handful of views each week because it’s not optimized for SEO.
Notice how it experienced a massive spike in pageviews during the first week that it was published, but then very few pageviews in the weeks and months since then. This is because readers can only find it if they dig through the blog archives or if I tweet it out. Since this article doesn’t rank on the front page of Google for any particular keyword, it doesn’t receive any recurring daily organic search traffic.
Now contrast that article with one I recently wrote titled “VOO vs. VTI: Which Index Fund is Better?” that specifically targets the keyword phrase VOO vs VTI. At the time of this writing, if you type in “VOO vs. VTI” on Google, that article I wrote shows up as the number one search result.
By using the three-step SEO process outlined in Simple SEO for Bloggers, I was able to write an article that ranked on the front page of Google for a specific keyword phrase, which means I now bring in free recurring traffic each day from Google when someone searches for “VOO vs VTI” and clicks on my article.
Here’s a snapshot of the weekly traffic for that article:
Notice the spike in pageviews during the first week that the article was published, followed by a subsequent decline in pageviews, followed by a rise as Google slowly pushed my article higher and higher in the search results. Now, each week I receive over 500 pageviews on that article without ever promoting it on social media, my email list, or anywhere else.
This is the power of writing SEO-optimized articles: You only have to write an article once, then you can sit back and enjoy the free recurring organic search traffic week after week in perpetuity.
