Visualizing a Content Plan

In the previous tutorial, I explained a simple process for creating a content plan:

(1) Place all of your keywords into one Excel file with three columns:

  • The keyword
  • The search volume for that keyword
  • The difficulty for that keyword

(2) Sort the keywords in the following manner:

  • First, sort by difficulty from low to high
  • Then, sort by search volume from high to low

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be left with a list of keywords that looks something like this:

The first article you write should target keyword A. The second article you write should target keyword B. The third should target keyword C, and so on.

To visualize this concept, it helps to think of a scatterplot with keyword difficulty along the x-axis and search volume along the y-axis:

(Each dot represents a keyword)

The first articles you write should be in the lowest difficulty column:

These are the articles that you can get to rank on the front page of Google the fastest since they have the lowest difficulty.

The order you write them in should be from highest search volume to lowest search volume. So, write about keyword A first, then keyword B, then keyword C:

Keyword A | Difficulty: 0 | Search Volume: 400

Keyword B | Difficulty: 0 | Search Volume: 300

Keyword C | Difficulty: 0 | Search Volume: 200

Once you’ve written those articles, move on to the next column of keywords:

Repeat this process, working your way down each column of keywords.

Over time, the articles that you wrote targeting the lower difficulty keywords will start to rank higher on Google, which will increase your organic traffic and your overall domain authority. This means you can begin to rank for higher difficulty keywords, which will be the exact keywords you start targeting as your site gets older.

By following this strategy, your total organic traffic should increase steadily over time.
